Weekly Wrap-Up: Oct 9 – 29, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny Finished:

  • Plot Twist by Erin La Rosa: This is technically the second book in a series but can be read without the first. Sophie is a romance author who goes viral on tik tok complaining that she doesn’t believe in love and Dash is the former child actor turned landlord that’s struggling with his sobriety. Their romance was pretty cute and the book was a fun read.
  • My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon: Alison has agreed to take in her estranged and dying, abusive mother, but once she moves in weird things keep happening. This book was a good fall read, very tense. It’s not my favorite of McMahon’s books (a bit creepier in my mind than most of her work) but definitely a good October read.
  • Palm for Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman: This is the 4th book in the Mrs. Pollifax series and the series continues to be delightful. Mrs. Pollifax is sent out to uncover a scheme involving Plutonium at an all-inclusive spa/convalescent inn in Geneva. As always she manages to succeed by making friends with strangers, asking questions, and letting people underestimate her. The book was a cozy read for sure.
  • Midnight at the Houdini by Delilah S Dawson: After a major disappointment, Anna ends up in the Houdini, a hotel that creates doors, disappears hallways, and has a number of trap doors at the most inconvenient times where she starts to believe that magic does exist. Meanwhile, Max is a 16 year old boy that’s been trapped in the Houdini his entire life and has basically been waiting for an escape. This book was delightful and I really enjoyed the magic and atmosphere at the Houdini.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • An Elderly Lady is up to no good by Helen Tursten: Yo this book is wild. Maud is an old lady who goes around murdering people she doesn’t like. This book is a series of short stories and legit, she kills someone because they’re a gold digger. Again, WILD
  • House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A Craig: Annaleigh is one of 11 daughters, after her mother died 5 of her sisters have followed. I’m super early in but I think it’s going to be a bit of a ghost story and I’m looking forward to seeing what else happens.

Sam’s Update

What Sam Finished:

  • The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty: this is about a retired pirate being blackmailed out of retirement to find some chick’s granddaughter. I loved this so much

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • House of Roots and Ruin by Erin A. Craig: this is the second book in this series. Our main character Verity has been cooped up in highmoor for too long, when she threatens to leave, her sister tells her about her big secret. Verity can see ghosts, not a spoiler, it happens in the first few chapters. She leaves anyway and things are gonna happen… listening on audio and love it.
  • The Foxglove King by Hannah Witten: this is about a necromancer who was a drug runner (drugs here are poisons) that gets caught up in some mystery about villages that keep getting raided and the king wants to know if his son is a spy. I love it so much but I can’t seem to motivate myself to pick it up.
  • A Hero Born by Jin Yong – this is apparently one of the great Chinese fantasy books that’s been translated. I’m really loving it so far, audio is great

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam and Ginny
