Weekly Wrap-Up: Sept 1-17, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny Finished:

  • Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu: Our two main characters are a Realtor and a Data Analyst at a real estate firm, who end up on a work trip and decide to take their friendship to the next level. Honestly I can’t tell you much more than that because the two main characters felt so bland that their names and any information (other than weird details about their families) literally slid out of my brain.
  • When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire: This is the 15th book in the Toby Daye series (and OMG this series is so long (not a complaint)). Toby and Tybalt are FINALLY getting married except they’ve been invited to the high kings home to do it and of course nothing is easy. So Toby and crew have to fight a bunch of disguised bad guys and this book was just a ton of fun.
  • Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir: This book was a reread. Ryland Grace wakes up with basically no memory on a spaceship and realizes he’s going to be in charge of saving the human race. The beginning of this book could be a little frustrating, but dear god did I enjoy Grace running around trying to Science and Math his way out of problems.
  • Breaking Free: How I escaped polygamy and the FLDS cult by Rachel Jeffs: Rachel Jeffs is the daughter of the “Prophet” of the FLDS church and dealt with sexual assault by her father (while a young girl), being one of many sister wives (who were often abusive towards her and her children), and dealt with increasingly unhinged rules coming from on high. A lot of this takes place in Utah and it’s wildly unnerving to hear references to things happening in places you’re familiar with. Good book, but ooof.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris: As far as I can tell this book is about the child of a private school’s groundskeeper becoming a badass and taking down the school. I’m like 10% in and there’s a lot of perspective shifts.

Sam’s Update

What Sam Finished:

  • Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer: this is adorable. It’s about a chick who finds herself as the super hot villain’s assistant. There’s an inside person and they’re trying to figure out who they are. It’s a book that knows exactly what it is and I loved it.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle: This is magic school (but college) meets moon magic and it’s so good. I love the main characters and I can’t wait to see what happens.
  • The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty: this is about a retired pirate being blackmailed out of retirement to find some chick’s granddaughter. Also loving the hell out of this

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam and Ginny
