The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
What I drank prior: idk I’m fuggin,.. drunk??
Spoiler-free Overview: Sociopathic teenager meets boy next door. Alex and Jack (respectively) are starting a relationship… which is interesting because Alex foesn’t think she can feel anything. BUt she starts to form friendships like she never knew she could and it’s like… really fucking hard to explain.
Spoiler-free Thoughts:
So… I have… lots of feelings… about this book. This is another that I needed time to pull my thoughts together for. It definitely broke me into a thousand tiny itsy bitsy pieces. Its a book that makes you take a hard look at your life…
Characters: I wanna talk about the three of them individually because Mindy does an excellent job with all of them.
- Alex: I relate to her so hard haha. Hear me out, I am not a psychopath, but I find the act of personal relationships both essential (to my mental health) and fucking hard. In general, people are the worst, but once you find the good ones, you fight to protect them. She… she helped me figure that out I thnk. And that is some high praise coming from me.
- Jack: My precious cinnamon role. But he’s also, like, a real person.
- Peekay/Claire: What a DOLL. But also, she’s a great friend. She’s the pastor’s kid, but knows it, and in some cases, uses that to her advantage. ALSO, HER PARENTS. They remind me so much of my own.
Plot:
So obviously this is character driven. But I’m going to write out my notes here… because I think they provide a clearer picture of my thoughts during the reading process.

*************END SPOILERS**********************
Writing Style:
Pretty engrossing actually.
What to pair it with: Uhm….. a really nice amber ale I think. Its def a beer book but not a cheap beer book.
Rating: 4.5/5 Shots
