Weekly Wrap-Up: Oct 2 – 8, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny Finished:

  • Invisible women by Caroline Criado Pèrez: this nonfiction book is about the gender gap in big data and the ways big data often ignores the data they have. This book looks at the medical industry, technology, and even the plan for snow plowing to show how choices are made that disadvantage women. And it made me so rationally angry.
  • When Franny Stands Up by Eden Robins: this book gives of Mrs. Maisel vibes and the general plot is that women comedians have the ability to create showstoppers where they create feelings in the audience, things like rage or feeling like Cinderella. This book was definitely a delight. Franny is a fascinating character and it was interesting to see how the plot advanced.
  • The Fiery Crown by Jeffe Kennedy: This is the second book in the forgotten empires series and Lia (the Orchid Queen) and Con (the Slave King) are dealing with their tenuous relationship while trying to take down the evil emperor Anure. This book isn’t as spicy as I expected for a romance novel, but the plot is interesting and it was a ton of fun to see how the weaknesses of the main characters affected their decision making.
  • The Promised Queen by Jeffe Kennedy: This is the third book in the Forgotten Empires series and Lia and Con are regrouping after some difficulties to come up with a better plan to seek out the evil empire and try to revitalize the land. Again, I think this book could have and should have been a bit hotter, but the plot really was a ton of fun.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • A Day of Fallen Night by Samatha Shannon: this is the prequel to Priory of the Orange Tree and is hard to describe. But I love (most of) the characters and Im finding the way the plot is growing to be really interesting – haven’t really gotten much further in this.
  • The Ferryman by Justin Cronin: The world here involves an island of people who are sent to be kind of regenerated when they reach the end of their lifespan, and then a normal single-lifetime servant class. Proctor, a ferryman who helps people go for that regeneration, is helping his dad, when they have a weird conversation that’s clearly going to send him down a rabbit hole.
  • Sapiens; a Brief History of Humankind by Yual Noah Harari: This is nonfiction. And it’s hard to describe, but it’s going through history and I’m at the point where the book is discussing the move from hunting/foraging to agrarian societies. It’s way more interesting than I thought it was going to be.

Sam’s Update

What Sam Finished:

  • Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle: This is magic school (but college) meets moon magic and it’s so good. This was fantastic. If anyone likes moon-related aesthetics… this is for you.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • House of Roots and Ruin by Erin A. Craig: this is the second book in this series. Our main character Verity has been cooped up in highmoor for too long, when she threatens to leave, her sister tells her about her big secret. Verity can see ghosts, not a spoiler, it happens in the first few chapters. She leaves anyway and things are gonna happen… listening on audio and love it.
  • The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty: this is about a retired pirate being blackmailed out of retirement to find some chick’s granddaughter. Also loving the hell out of this

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam and Ginny
