Review for book 1

What I drank prior: coming home from kickball like… can I tell you how much I’ve had? No. Can I tell you I lost a game at the beginning of the night and had to chug a half a pitcher? Yes. Yes I can. I definitely did that.

Goodreads Overview:

The fabulous sequel to 2019’s hit debut novel: Master of Sorrows.

Annev has avoided one fate. But a darker path may still claim him . . .

After surviving the destruction of Chaenbalu, new mysteries and greater threats await Annev and his friends in the capital city of Luqura. As they navigate the city’s perilous streets, Annev searches for a way to control his nascent magic and remove the cursed artifact now fused to his body.

But what might removing it cost him?

As Annev grapples with his magic, Fyn joins forces with old enemies and new allies, waging a secret war against Luqura’s corrupt guilds in the hopes of forging his own criminal empire. Deep in the Brakewood, Myjun is learning new skills of her own as apprentice to Oyru, the shadow assassin who attacked the village of Chaenbalu – but the power of revenge comes at a daunting price. And back in Chaenbalu itself, left for dead in the Academy’s ruins, Kenton seeks salvation in the only place he can: the power hoarded in the Vault of Damnation . . .

Drunk Overview: so this is a sequel so get out if you don’t want to know what happens.

So my kid is on the run cause he fuckin destroyed his school. He’s with his two besties who’s names start with T and the other guy who’s name starts with F and the adult (the only adult) named Sra-something. I’m sorry firends I’m in the train and don’t have my notes don’t hate me. Anyway. Annev has the scary prosthetic and we’re trying to figure out what’s up. Ok????

Spoiler-free Thoughts: this book was so long. Like soooooo long. I wanted to know what happened to my kids but like did it have to take so long?

Characters: idk how to deal with this except that the ones who follow A end up at a school and have a not-so-bad time. The F kid just keeps screwing up. The bad guy from book 1 is up to something and I feel like I’m supposed to know what but I don’t so that may be a problem and MAJUN (yes you can make any implications you want about the fact that I remember her name and not the others all you want) is like evil now. Like basically they’re all evil now and that’s what this whole book is about.

Plot: it’s so long. Like so long. Just give me two books instead of this please. I think a few of these things matter but when you put them all in this sequence in one book, I think it doesn’t matter. Honestly there were some bits that I don’t think are important but knowing the way fantasy books work they will matter and that’s very annoying. Like… at least one of those things should matter in the book but they don’t in this one.

Writing Style: I maintain that this books is very high fantasy style but like… next section please

World Building: what this author doesn’t consider is the patience of his reader. There are a lot of elements that are so cool like the liquid that gives magic powers??? But with the pace and the need to infuse so many plot elements I got so bored. Like so bored.

What to pair it with: vodka soda cause they taste so good at first, you don’t care at all about VSs #4 and 5 but 6 and 7 crush you

Rating: 2.5/5

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
