DRUNK REVIEW: Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (Between Earth and Sky #1)

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (Between Earth and Sky #1)

Reviewed by Sam!

What I drank prior: ok so it’s been a while since i’ve read this but not so much time right? I’m drunk. I’ve had a couple Parker Poured (not actually but feels like) moscow mules plus about a bottle of wine.

Goodreads Overview:

The first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy, inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic.

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.

Drunk Overview: So ok. THere’s this guy who’s prophecy is gonna kill everyone (the crow, also my son). There’s the captain lady who just wants to have the power she deserves even though she’s #magic. And then there’s the sun priest who is the sun priest who wants to make life better. My crow son is on his way to fulfill his prophecy.

Spoiler-free Thoughts: I fucking loved this. I have new kids

Characters: .So there’s the priest. She’s dope but she’s also super naive (i have tried twice to spell that word so please dont hate me) but how is she supposed to not be? I do like that she’s trying to make the city better (not the world, let’s be clear) but there’s not a lot there. There’s also my captain lady who’s the actual best ever. She knows what she wants and is in the worst scenario. she only wants to get by and now she gets attention. There’s also my crow son. Serapio is my son, everyone can fight me for him. We can assume he is the guy in the prophecy that’s going to end the world, but i love him so SHUT UP

Plot: This is one of those stories where you have zero clue what’s happening but you know everything that’s happening is important. It’s not really a mystery but it feels like one. Is that weird? It feels weird.

The end is unsurprising but makes me so so sad. I’m really not saying its predictable, it’s absolutely not. But it’s unsurprising.

Writing Style: OK but… wut?

World Building: I need more thanks.

What to pair it with: A port wine. It’s thick but lovely. Thanks

Rating: 5/5
