Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness.
Elisa is the chosen one.
But she is also the younger of two princesses, the one who has never done anything remarkable. She can’t see how she ever will.
Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.
And he’s not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies seething with dark magic are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people’s savior. And he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.
Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young.
Most of the chosen do.
Drunk Overview: man. This book started out rough to the point wherr I wasnt sure if this book was gonna be fat shaming and then it wasnt. Elisa has a PROHPECY and has coped in its shadow. She gets married off, kidnapped, etc. These trials cause her to be stronger (and develop sloghtly better willpower) before helping to cause problems for the bad guys and save her kingdom.
Characters: like I said I was really worried about the fat shaming. ELISA really enjoys eating (I get that) but does a good job to adjusting to harsher atmospheres. I really enjoyed her growth through the book where she realizes where her strenghts and weaknesses are. I also really enjoyed the growth of a number of the characters. The person who satrys as a maid ends up learns that you cany always judge someone off of their current circumstances.
Plot:fun. Honestly. This book rarely went the way I expected, which was fantastic. When I thought people would magivally esxaoe (Editor’s Note: I am assuming she means “magically escape” but honestly having been with her when the Nats won the World Series it could mean anything) they wouldn’t and the build up to the climax of the book made aense and had been wonderfully foreshadowed.
Writing Style: fun?
World building: I feel like more could hace been done here but it was still a full world. For so much of it we were looking through the eyes of a sheltered noble. Seeing the perspective of the diffetent religions and some of the different regions was great but I hope sequels will build out even more.
- I want to hear more about past “quest” people.
- I really enjoyed the way the “crystal gems) communicated
- Hlly shit. Elisas first encounter eith the baddies was intense
- I would have been far kore bloodthirsty (with far worse results) than Elisa. What I felt what a weakness forgiving people ended up being a strength
- The romance was fine. Not a be-all-end-all like some that Ive read but enjoyable enough
What to pair it with: gimlet. This book takes place in such a hot atmosphere that you need something light to cool you off.
