The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

What I drank prior: holy shit it’s probably a whole bottle of wine and a beer. We watched Pocahontas and Toy Story and 3? Episodes of Letterkenny.
Goodreads Overview:
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?
Drunk Overview: this is a slytherin angsty slow burn romance. I’m not sure how else to explain it. Out main lady wants to kill the king to take his throne but she has to make him love her. He also doesn’t let anyone within 5 feet of them so that’s tough. Anyway. That’s the plot.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: this was exactly what I needed. ExACTLY what I needed.
Characters: the only POV is of our lady and she just wants to get this kid to fall in love with her and then she can kill him and take his throne. She catches the King’s attention and he’s all shadow-y and stuff but I also love him a everyone needs to fightme he’s my new son.
Plot: I did NOT want this to be a stand alone but it is and I fucking loved it. The plot was evenly paced and it kept me on my toes and while listening on audio I was never bored. In fact, I stayed up until close to 3am on 1.75x speed to finish it.. so.
Writing Style: suiuuuupwr angsty. Super. Angsty.
World Building: ok but you’re telling me I don’t get more???
What to pair it with: Hot cider with whiskey. It’s sweet but it also burns, like my little slytherin
Rating: 4.5/5
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam
