Weekly Wrap-Up: Aug 17 – 23, 2020

Happy Monday, Boozie Readers!

Sam’s Update

I have really been leaning into my slump, folks. I’ll finish my binge soon and then I’ll get back to it

What Sam Finished:

Nada

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • The Stars and Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus: I got the rec from Njeri from Onyx Pages and if you haven’t found her on Booktube you’re missing out. This is the story of Audrey and Mabel. Audrey gets sent to the states from Trinidad because her mom catches her making out with a girl. Mabel is on the struggle bus in general. Audrey and Mabel get to friending… the writing in this is stunning.
  • The Memory of Souls by Jenn Lyons: This is the last book in the A Chorus of Dragons that comes out on Aug 25th. I love this book and I don’t want it to end at all ever.

Ginny’s Update

Welp, School started. And it’s great so far. I have a whole bucket of homework I’m trying to get ready, which really means I’m going to be doing a deeper dive into my comfort books. Be prepared for a lot of Seanan McGuire, John Scalzi, and romance novels in my future.

What Ginny Finished:

  • Exit Strategy by Martha Wells: Sometimes you just have to read about a Murderbot doing it’s best. This book, like all the others, is a delight. Murderbot’s internal monologue continues to be both hilarious and fascinating. It’s a really interesting idea of creating personhood for ones self. This book made me have so many emotions because there are beautiful parts about Murderbot actually figuring out their own emotions and what they want to do. There were also a lot of really cool fight scenes. The book has the range.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • Once Broken Faith by Seanan McGuire: Did you see what I wrote about comfort books? This is the 10th book in the October Daye series and I’m not very far in yet. But the High King is showing up and the end of the third chapter had me chanting “Oh Fuck” literally out loud and with no small amount of joy.
  • The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh: Okay, I legit loved the first bunch of chapters of this book. And then new POVs were introduced. This is a retelling of Sherezad which is super cool. But there’s this whole subplot with a childhood friend that I really don’t care for. Which means I started this book, read 100 pages, and then it’s sat on my desk for a week b/c I have a hard time picking it back up.
  • Beyond Ruin by Kit Rocha: This is the 7th book in the Beyond Series, and I love a lot of the themes in this book. It’s taken me the longest to read (not saying all that much yet) b/c I’ve only been reading a chapter at a time. The plot is really racketing up, and I think this is the first book where I’ve found the sheer number of POV’s a little tiring. Keeping track of four people in a relationship is hard enough when you don’t have random other people butting in….
