What I drank prior: plenty of spike seltzers. Is it the current fad? Yes. Are they delicious? Yes. Twas a good evening.

Goodreads Overview:

For once, it seems like the Kingdom of the Mists has reached a point of, if not perfection, at least relative peace. Queen Arden Windermere is getting settled on her family’s throne; no one’s going to war with anyone else; it’s almost like everything is going to be okay. Even October “Toby” Daye is starting to relax her constant vigilance, allowing herself to think about the future, and what it might entail.

And then Simon Torquill comes back, and everything begins to fall apart. In Faerie, nothing stays buried forever. No matter how much you might want it to.

Drunk Overview: turns out the first murder Toby solved wasnt actually a murder and now shes hunting down a somewhat mysterious power that feels its above rules and hasnt been treated fairly.

Spoiler-free Thoughts: man. This book is what Ive been hoping this series would grow into. Toby has spent so many books dealing with her depression and getting to a point where she was living rather tham surviving and ita amazing what a difference that makes in a book. Meanwhile shes been making friends and it means that any boon could bring in such a different cast of characters. This book really does its job of moving across faerie and the real world and interacting with a cast of characters soanning the whole series of books.

Characters: this book really showed growth in charactet arcs of a bunch of the characters. Sylvester, luna, and simon. Characyets that have existed from the very beginning get these amazing arcs. And even newer characters like Arden. This is a series that usually invites new characters in but this was the first book that didnt do that which allowed this epic growth of otherwise minor characters.

Plot: the big bad of this book took me co mlm pletely by surprise. But I loved the twists amd turns. Watching Toby take advantage of the locations she knows and yhe friendships she’s made was beautiful. I honestly feel like this is the book where Tiby learns she matters. There have been situations where shes been told that, but this is the book where everyone had the opportunity to really learn the impact shes had on people. What a delight. This book also makes me think Amandine, Tobys mother is going to make a reappearance in a future book and I cannot wait!

Writing Style: awesome. So many hints dropped another what is going to happen while being subtle enough I didnt pick up on everything.

Series gueses:

  • Amandine is going tonreappear and soon
  • Toby is going to have a trip to Canada with Quentin
  • Thats all I have for now, im still just proud I called the Quentin reveal in the last book.

What to pair it with: rose. I promise if you read the book thatll make sense

Rating: 5/5 Shots
