Minda’s review of Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. Drunk girl was harsh.
Editor’s Note: A lot of us have reviewed these. Here and the last one here
What I drank prior: Bowling end-of-year after game – I’ve had an indefinite amount of vodkas sodas and a bunch of fireball…
Spoiler-free Overview: Evil tech company attacks hidden planet. Some hidden planet people escape, though not before experiencing lasting damage that comes back to bite everyone in the ass. AND THEN somehow even crazier shit happens when AI does AI things.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: This book was good. I really liked some elements of it but though others were a bit underwhelming for me. I mean realistically there was a chosen one theme throughout and I was a bit annoyed about it. The romantic relation that this is more or less based on — I just couldn’t get on board.
Characters: katydid was kinda the worst guys. I mean I can’t relate exactly but I just don’t get how she can be so freaking lame. The. We have Miles. I get why people ship him, but uh no. He’s literally like a paper character of what (I guess) teen women are supposed to like. Made all the more obvi by **RTOTAL SPOILERS**. I was kinda rooting for Aiden.
Plot: I honestly didn’t love how it ended up necess, but I loved how the plot proceeded? It made total sense and I loved how the twist played into the plot near the end.
World Building: This world was pretty amaze. I thought the secret planet was as built out as it needed to be, and the world itself – as fucked as it is – is very thought out. #props
Writing Style: I get why this is so conforverbatial. But I loved the wiriting style and the different methods of getting the necessary info—through reports, eye-to-nougbreportubg, etc
—SPOILERS Don’t read! Or do, live your life—
What I hated: unpop opentipn but I thought their love story was totally juvenile. Also I fucking hated all the “u” bs… no one but old people use that anymore.
What I disliked: I think it’s always though in a story to not have all the info and this is one of those that I kinda struggled through because of it.
What I liked: #itsme but I loved the world building and was totally here for it, I didn’t see any specific plot holes besides teenage stupidity so I was pretty happy.
What I loved: I honestly loved AIDEN. I adore complicated characters and I think z/he was complicated/relatable to all f them.
—End Spoilers—
What to pair it with: Somrthing cray like tequila and raspberry
Rating: 3/5 shots
