The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson

What I drank prior: so this is not my drunkest review but I can say that I proudly finished at least a bottle of Rosé.

Spoiler-free Overview: Our lady Baru Cormorant is anchild living happily with her mom and dads (yes dads) and these a-holes show up and conquer everything. They say it’s for the betterment of society, bringing technology, trade, and education. Comes with a price though. Baru goes to the new school and is a savant at math and shit. The Masquerade thinks, rightfully so, that by educating the children, they’ll be on the Empire’s side and convince the parents. Fast forward a decade, she becomes the head accountant lady on another similar island for the empire. The nobles wanna revolt, she just wants to save her island by becoming “one of the empire” to change things. Blah blah. Anyway, she gotta deal with pilictal shit and a rebellion.

Spoiler-free Thoughts: this was not an easy read by any definition. But man was it good. Political intrigue. Deception. Glory. Battle scenes. The works. Also, diverse with both ethnicity and sexual orientation. Pretty fuggin great.

Characters: I loved Baru. Told from her POV we get a lot of her thoughts. Her companions are awesome. Tian Hu and Lo were great. The other characters were hard to keep straight cause there were a fuck ton of them and they all had LONG, similar names.

Plot: to say it’s slow burn is an understatement. But what this book does with the twists is beautiful. Usually in 1st person POV stories you know what the character’s motivations and plan is right? In this, you don’t really. My notes say “I fucking knew it” but did I? *shrug*

Writing Style: quite descriptive but in a good way.

What to pair it with: literally the darkest red wine you can find. Should be like a tart syrupy red wine. Bordeaux is yummy.

Rating: 3.5/5 shot. Only cause it was super slow at times and I couldn’t keep the characters straight.

COMMENT DOWN BELOW: I feel like there aren’t a bunch of people who’ve read this yet. If you have, let me know! I’d love to chat about it with ya.

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
