Weekly Wrap-Up: August 7-13, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny Finished:

  • Gravity by Tess Gerritsen: This book was a blast! Emma Watson (I know) is an astronaut/doctor who is dealing with a medical emergency in space. The medical emergency was fascinating and there was something a ton of fun about things constantly going wrong in a place where there’s limited help.
  • The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberly and Austin Siegemund-broka:  Two writers wrote books together before a mysterious event that caused her to retire and him to write poorly received books. God this book was pretentious. Not my favorite.
  • Cruel Seduction by Katee Robert: This is the fifth book in Dark Olympus, where a political marriage gets in the way of some other relationships. And the 4th book in the series was not my fav but this book was a ton of fun! I loved the intrigue and the various relationships between the different parts of the poly relationship.
  • Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper: Emmy Harlow is returning to her magic hometown to arbitrate a magic contest and runs into Talia, one of the contenders in said competition. This was a fun read. Don’t have much more to say.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson: This book covers Winston Churchill’s place in WWII. Basically, it’s a story that’s been told a million times and as much as I like Erik Larson’s other books, I’m not sure this book has proved why it needed to exist.
  • Burn it Down by Maureen Ryan: Another non-fiction book, this time about Hollywood and how the different levels of corruption are built into the system. This is a book that’s going to make me angry but deserve it.
  • Jackpot by Nic Stone: I’m not far into the book but Rico works at a gas station and sold the winning lottery ticket. In order to get paid for being the person who sold the ticket, she needs to find the winner. Nic Stone reads the audio! I’m looking forward to getting further into this.

Sam’s Update

What Sam Finished:

  • Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo: this is the second to Ninth House and I can’t remember much except there are ghosts. Not as good as book 1.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo – this is the second to Ninth House and I can’t remember much except there are ghosts. Almost done but it’s not nearly as good as book 1.
  • The Obsidian Tower by Melissa Caruso – this is the first book in a new series in the same world as Tethered Mage. Our main character’s magic is flawed, she can’t touch anything without killing it (plants, animals, people, whatever). There’s a tower her family is protecting and when it’s accidentally opened and her grandma disappeared, she’s gotta figure out the mystery. Loving this so far for sure

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam and Ginny
