Weekly Wrap-Up: Jan 2 – 8, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

And happy new year!!

Sam’s Update

What a great first week of the new year. I finished 3 books!! And went to MAGFest, which is a gaming con, essentially. And it was a fuckin blast.

What Sam is Finished:

  • Furysong by Rosaria Munda – this is the third and final book of this series and I was so happy to see how it ended. I can’t tell you what this one is about, cause it’s the finale, but it’s basically post-Russian revolution but with dragons. It’s got a caste system, sorta, with an intelligence exam. And the best get to ride dragons. Which is awesome. I am def enjoying finishing up my open series.
  • Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire – this is the next book in this portal fantasy novella series. There’s a school for kids who come back from their Narnia in order to assimilate back in to the world as much as they can. This one is about the mermaid. And it was great.
  • Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree – this is a cozy fantasy about an orc who finished their adventuring to open a coffee shop lol. It was so friggin cute I can’t.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks by Shauna Robinson – this is a rom com about Maggie, who takes in a bookshop for her best friend while she’s on maternity. Maggie is just trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. The bookstore is sort of owned by this guy who’s the worst, and he sends his spy, Malcolm, to make sure Maggie is up to snuff, only selling classics, etc. so when the store isn’t doing well, she starts an underground book club that will allow her to sell more contemporary things. It’s super cute.
  • A Very Merry Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams – the newest Bromance book about the country singer and Mac’s ex gf and it’s also super cute.

Ginny’s Update

Happy 2023 everyone! Utah has been buried in the snow which is wonderful and made for a really good first week of hte year.

What Ginny Finished:

  • Well Traveled by Jen DeLuca: This is the fourth book in the Well Met series and if follows Lulu (the uptight lawyer) rage quits her job and ends up traveling with the Dueling Kilts. In the meantime, she and Dex (the promiscuous leading man) become friends and then more. This book reminded me of the best parts of the Ren Faire. And I really enjoyed the way Lulu and Dex’s relationship grows. I hope there’s going to continue to be more.
  • A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera: Luz Alana is in charge of making sure her families rum distillery gets European contracts, and also is trying to get her inheritance which requires she get marries. Evanston is an Earl who is trying to get his whiskey distillery out from under his shitty dad’s hands which also requires a marriage. Enter the marriage of convenience, except they’re both super horny and also in love. I found some of the “Oh I did something wrong” conversations seemed a little simplified, but I still really enjoyed this book. I’ll probably keep reading the series.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin: I’m rereading this so I can finally read the second and third books in the series. It’s hard to explain what’s happening because there are three different stories that are happening. But in this world there are people who have the ability to use temperature and energy and whatnot to control earthquakes and freeze people. Honestly, the way things build is amazing!

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

    — Sam, Minda, and Ginny
