Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline (Ready Player One #2)
Reviewed by Sam!
What I drank prior: Tonight… we drank all the things. Went over to Minda’s to do a tasting of beers and donuts (delicious). Then there were margs while we watched Cruella. Then there was a Disney Power Hour with wine. I haven’t been this drunk in a WHILE.
An unexpected quest. Two worlds at stake. Are you ready?
Days after Oasis founder James Halliday’s contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vault, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the Oasis a thousand times more wondrous, and addictive, than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle and a new quest. A last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize. And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who will kill millions to get what he wants. Wade’s life and the future of the Oasis are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance.
Drunk Overview: This is the sequel to ReadyPlayer One. If you haven’t read it, I’m sorry. Basically we start with our main guy, he found a new thing that the founder of the Oasis made that basically maps to your brain and you can see touch feel smell all the things in the Oasis. It makes them a ass ton of cash (all four of them Ache, Shoto, Samantha, and my guy that I can’t remember his name even though he’s the main character) but Samantha isn’t pleased and they break up. After a few years, there just so happens to be a new competition. The AI that Halliday made of himself took over and locked everyone in their brains in the Oasis… and the squad has like 12 hours to finish the competition. There are 7 shards or something, so they go off to the races.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: I listened on audio and I hate to say this, but I was NOT pleased with this book. Like, it was ok, but it seemed like thi is an alternate to what Ready Player One could have been.
Characters: So… our main guy… OMG HIS NAME ISI WADE i forgot until this very moment. Wade is so dumb, just like he was in the other one and he doesn’t really learn anything. No character development of literally any of the characters. Ache is still my fave, Samantha is cool but mostly because she has the same name as me. She’s basically a wet blanket this whole book. And the Shoto is Shoto. They add like…. A junior squad that help, sorta, but i feel like they’re just a set up for another book.
Plot: It’s basically the same plot as the first one but with higher stakes if you can believe it. Literally the same beats and I was so bored in the middle. UGH. I loved the first one and I’m so dissappointed in this. So so sad.
Writing Style: It’s very similar to the first one, like just listing a whole bunch of 80s related things, and such. Will Wheaton is still really good at narrating them though.
World Building: It’s the same but not run by all the bad guys. They literally start the book by saying they’ve used all their money to fix all the things. Like world hunger and poverty and the climate and such. It’s annoying.
What to pair it with: What was the last drink you had, because it’s that. The last thing I drank was a Pinot Grigio. So. That.
Rating: 1/5 shots
