Undying by Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman

What I drank prior: first in-person book club of 2020!!! Linz made this amazing margarita with a citrus fruit juice that’s not a kumquat but close to it. Plus probably a whole bottle of wine.

Goodreads Overview:

Trapped aboard the Undying’s ancient spaceship and reeling from what they’ve learned there, scavenger Mia and academic Jules are plunged into a desperate race to warn their home planet of the danger humanity’s greed has unleashed. From the mountains of Spain to the streets of Prague, the sequel to Unearthed is a white-knuckle ride that will send readers hurtling back to earth, and leave them breathless until the last page.

The earth’s fate rests in Mia and Jules’s hands in the epic conclusion to New York Times best-selling authors Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s tomb-raiding sci-fi duology.

Drunk Overview: this is the sequel to Unearthed (check the reviewwww if you don’t want spoilers). Basically this girl thief and this archeologist dude fall in lurve on a planet where life existed 50,000 years ago. They ended up portaling to a spaceship orbiting the earth and the life on the spaceship are human. So this story is all about trying to figure out how humans ended up on a spaceship meant to have been 50,000 years old and now they want to kill earth-bound humans. So that’s cool

Spoiler-free Thoughts: this was… worse than the first one. The first one was fine, and I hadn’t planned on finishing the duology, but then I did.

Characters: they’re so fucking FLAT! Like… seriously, there is absolutely no character development in this at all. They’re so boring. So so boring.

Plot: I mean, in theory I should have been excited by the plot based story but Jesus, could it have been any more boring. Even the explaination for why the other planet’s structures were so old was SO ANNOYING and didn’t make any sense. Just. Ugh. I love these the other series these other two authors did together. Was it a literary masterpiece (check Sam’s reviews)? No. Was it even as hallmark-y as the other series? NO! Just give me Julian and Lilac please.

Writing Style: idk. I was annoyed.

World Building: it was both predictable and made no sense.

What to pair it with: it’s bud light on tap. Tastes like the tap system more than the beer.

Rating: 1/5 shots

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam
