Beyond the Empire by K.B. Wagers
The adrenaline-fueled, explosive conclusion to the Indranan War trilogy by K. B. Wagers.
Gunrunner-turned-Empress Hail Bristol was dragged back to her home planet to take her rightful place in the palace. Her sisters and parents have been murdered, and the Indranan Empire is reeling from both treasonous plots and foreign invasion.
Now, on the run from enemies on all fronts, Hail prepares to fight a full-scale war for her throne and her people, even as she struggles with the immense weight of the legacy thrust upon her. With the aid of a motley crew of allies old and new, she must return home to face off with the same powerful enemies who killed her family and aim to destroy everything and everyone she loves. Untangling a legacy of lies and restoring peace to Indrana will require an empress’s wrath and a gunrunner’s justice.
Synopsis from Goodreads
What I drank prior: beer. The baseball game I was supposed to was cancelled so I just drank plenty o beer and then went to get dinner.
Spoiler-free Overview: okay this is book 3. Hail is technivally ousted after the coup and is working hard to get her empire back. She also knows the complications like she can’t have chuldren anymore which is kind of helpful to continue the matrilineal line. Basically she goes after thebbig bad whose identity is revealed and shit goes down.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: this book had beautiful pacing. It could be a bit cheesy in moments but overall struck the tone I was hoping for. We have one person who has planned for years against someone who is smart and determined and fighting for more than herself.
Characters: I thought the big bad was in the end a little too simplistic compared to all the terror they had wrought. But I felt everyone was true to themself in the end. There was a lot of character growth and it was interesting to see how different characters tried to plan for an uncertain future.
Plot: its kind of what you would expect from the previous books. High action high adventure with enough twosts and turns to keep you going.
Writing Style: Action packed?
World Building: as the third book in the series this did a great job of living in the world of tge previous books. This book never lost its sense of location.
What to pair it with: scotch on the rocks. Its what Hail drank. Theres no other thought behind it. Im tired and tipsy. Shut up
