The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton
**I’d like to thank NetGalley and Tor Publishing to the opportunity to read this early in exchange for an honest review**
What I drank prior: Oh lord, uh… 7 beers? Idk. I lost count
Spoiler-free Overview: So this is a re-telling of King Lear with POC Women and magic. The magic is elemental, people can speak to the trees, and the stars can prodict the future. There are the sistas, Gaela, Reagan, and Elia. G and R are like… butt buddies, hating E. Also, there’s another King… guyman (that’s what we’re gonna call him) and his spymaster dude, a bastard son from Lear’s territory, who are up to something. But bastard son is in like with E. It’s a whole thing. ANYWHO it’s political and I love it.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: This book was a little slow, though not without merit. It’s a worldbuilding book. I thought it was excellent.
Characters: They’re all kind of awesome. This is very much a character driven and not a plot driven book. Elia… she’s kina annoyin. G and R are flawed but we get to see WHY. IT’s wonderful.
Plot: Takes a bit to get to the point, bt it’s fine. Pretty happy with how it turned out.
Writing Style: It’s quite descriptive. Down to clothing. She takes the time to describe each individual but not in a “i’m looking ina mirror” kind of way, more of a comparative kind of way. My sister and I look different BECASUE…
World Building: THis is where this book shines. I LOVE THIS WORLD. I wanna live in it. I wanna I wanna I wanna.
What to pair it with: an earthy red wine. or a dark beer
Rating: 3.5/5 shots.
This book comes out on March 27th and you can get it here.
COMMENT DOWN BELOW: Did anyone read King Lear? I didn’t. What are you reading right now?! I wanna KNOW
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
