Weekly Wrap-Up: Mar 6 – 12, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny Finished:

  • Troublemaker by Leah Remini: Leah Remini is one of the well-known defectors of the Mormon church. This starts with her introduction to the church through right after she left. Honestly, my biggest complaint about this book was that I would have liked a bit more attention on leaving. Then again, as a public figure, that’s probably covered incredibly well elsewhere. Still the book does a great job of showing how it targets people and why that makes it so hard to leave.
  • Sign Here by Claudi Lux: This book is about a salesman in hell (aka the person who gets others to sell their souls) and his plan to escape hell. Half the book follows as cliche family while the other half is in hell. If that doesn’t tell you what I thought about half the book I don’t know what would. I really like the idea of this book, but I kind of wish it had been on a smaller scale.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • Best Served Hot by Amanda Eliot: Julie confronts the new reviewer at a bougie place and posts the video which drums up interest. Because of that, she and the reviewer have to collaborate on some stories. This is one of those books that ends up being super white in a really irritating way. Also the main character is… well, I find her difficult. the only reason I’ve been able to read any of this is that it’s an audiobook b/c my brain is being grumpy right now.
  • The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin: This is the third book in the Broken Earthtrilogy and I can’t say much more than this. I started this book and got hit by something. I spent 18 hours sleeping on Saturday… And my brain can’t focus enough to actually read right now.

Sam’s Update

Boy was I right. What a week, but I’ve finished a few things because I was traveling and I read on flights and such.

What Sam is Finished:

So I went on vacation and not one of the ones where you have a lot of down time. One where I need to sleep for a week. Got a lot of reviews done, but no reading done.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna – this is the second book in the gilded ones series and again, loving it,
  • Stardust in their Veins by Laura Sebastian – this is the second book in this series and I am loving it. Book one is about 3 triplets who get sent to marry future kings of the neighboring kingdoms by their mother so that she can take over. So cool
  • Cooking at Home: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Recipes by David Chang and Priya Krishna – I read a review online that said this book is meant to be read cover to cover like a novel… so that’s what I’m doing and it’s actually fab. It helps that they’re talking a lot about Asian flavors (naturally) and I’ve been dying to learn more about those flavor profiles.

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam, Minda, and Ginny
