Ginny’s review for the previous book here.
What I drank prior: so.. I don’t do this a lot, but I did today. I had a really REALLY bad day so I drank a title and a half of wine along. I rarely drink alone but today it was warranted.
Goodreads Overview:
Return to #1 New York Times bestseller Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn world of Scadrial as its second era, which began with The Alloy of Law, comes to its earth-shattering conclusion in The Lost Metal.
For years, frontier lawman turned big-city senator Waxillium Ladrian has hunted the shadowy organization the Set—with his late uncle and his sister among their leaders—since they started kidnapping people with the power of Allomancy in their bloodlines. When Detective Marasi Colms and her partner, Wayne, find stockpiled weapons bound for the Outer City of Bilming, this opens a new lead. Conflict between the capital, Elendel, and the Outer Cities only favors the Set, and their tendrils now reach to the Elendel Senate—whose corruption Wax and his wife, Steris, have sought to expose—and Bilming is even more entangled.
After Wax discovers a new type of explosive that can unleash unprecedented destruction and realizes that the Set must already have it, an immortal kandra serving Scadrial’s god, Harmony, reveals that Bilming has fallen under the influence of another god: Trell, worshipped by the Set. And Trell isn’t the only factor at play from the larger Cosmere—Marasi is recruited by offworlders with strange abilities who claim their goal is to protect Scadrial . . . at any cost.
Wax must choose whether to set aside his rocky relationship with God and once again become the Sword that Harmony has groomed him to be. If no one steps forward to be the hero Scadrial needs, the planet and its millions of people will come to a sudden and calamitous ruin.
Drunk Overview: ok this is the last book in the wax and Wayne mistborn series. If you haven’t read the previous three then either get out or don’t get mad
So. The bands of mourning have been stored for “safe use” aka don’t fuck with us. But there’s still the gang that wants to give essentially a chaos shard power on this planet. Wax and Wayne are tryna stop it. And that’s what this boon is.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: this book made me sob profusely at 2:30am on a Wednesday.
Characters: ok so let’s talk about my ladies first. We’ve got Steris, who I literally can’t tell you how much I relate to her. She plans shit and is so like…. “I can’t do it” but she actually can but I get that feeling so much. Literally so much. And in this one, which Sanderson doesn’t hate making dire circumstances when the world is gonna end (cause duh), she’s a mom. Not that that stops her from being a bad ass. Quite the contrary. It means she knows the stakes and I live it. I love it so much.
Then there’s Marasi, another bad ASS. She’s just so smart and the way she and Wayne have just found their groove is so cute. I just love her. I also love her… new friends (without spoilers) and it’s so cool to see that part evolve. more on that in world building
Ok… so that’s the women. We’ll get to my boys in a minute, but let’s talk about the villain(s) for a sec. Cause they’re shards/cosmere villains and I LOVE IT. I love the master plan I love how smart it was and it’s all cause of that villain. I love it.
And now my boys. My precious boys. Wax is doing his best to get out of the game and be the politician he’s meant to be and not put his babies i. Danger. But… when Harmony is in trouble, Harmony calls upon his sword and Wax is all… literally fuck you but fine.
And Wayne. Omg Wayne. He’s just too great and I love it. Also I love how he’s like… secretly rich? (Not a spoiler, it’s in the first couple chapters). That whole bit was so funny. The obsession with hats is still there. He’s so pure and I swear to the gods… anyone who feels differently can shut their pie holes.
Plot: ooooook. So, in pure Brando Sando fashion, the universe is gonna end unless Harmony’s sword and his merry friends can save it. The whole bit about how the villain is villaining is so so good. It’s a unique and awesome puzzle to solve and I could not put this book down I just couldn’t. I can’t imagine a flaw in this book I just can’t.
Writing Style: all hail the king
World Building: ok… so not much more of this planet world building but we did get a lot of cosmere world building. More about the shards and how the sides are shaking out. It’s awesome and I can’t wait for the next books in the cosmere, which were gonna get cause of the secret boooookkksssss. Can’t wait.
What to pair it with: this one is tough cause I want to say like a temperanillo wine, but it just doesn’t fuck me up enough. So we’re gonna go with a double shot of chilled tequila. Fuck me UP
Rating: 5/5
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam
