Weekly Wrap-Up: Oct 10 – 16, 2022

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Friendly reminder that not all lives can matter until black lives do.

Minda’s Update

What Minda Finished:

  • The Sunshine Girls by Molly Fader – When bona fide 60s-era celebrity Kitty shows up at their mother BettyKay’s funeral claiming to be her best friend, estranged sisters Clara and Abbie don’t know what to believe. Was there a piece of their mother they never knew? The story is told through BettyKay’s journal entries as she finds herself in nursing school, Hollywood, and Vietnam and the friendship of a lifetime and the sister’s discover more about their mother than they ever bargained for. This was SO good! Thanks NetGalley for an ARC.

What Minda is Reading Now:

  • Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly – A WWII novel told from the perspective of three women in America, Poland, and Germany, respectively. The women each have a unique role during the war and their paths set them on a collision course to each other. Still pretty early in this one, but reading on audio.
  • The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams – “Set during the height of the women’s suffrage movement and with the Great War looming, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men.” Reading for a book club.

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • The Slaves’ War by Andrew Ward: This book covers the civil war from the perspective of the slaves, which is a really interesting idea. I’m still in the middle of this book, but I’ve gotten far enough into the war that there’s some really distressing stuff, which just means it can be a little difficult to read.
  • Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey: I generally really enjoy Sarah Gailey’s books, but this one is a little intense. Vera returns to her hometown to take care of her dying mother. However, she and her mother have been estranged and are cold to each other and also Vera’s father was (I think) a serial killer and this book is wildly creepy.

What Ginny Finished:

  • Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwater: This is the second book in the Regency Faerie Tale series and honestly, it took some getting into. But once it picked up I breezed through this book. Effie is a housemaid for a borderline abusive family and ends up in a faerie deal with a well meaning fairy, lord Blackthorn. This book has so many interesting takes on the Cinderalla story and I loved the ending.
  • Husband Material by Alexis Hall: I do love Hall’s books and I really enjoyed Boyfriend Material, the prior book. This book follows Lucien and Oliver about two years into their relationship, deciding if/what the next steps are. They are both still absolute messes and I almost felt like this book was set a little too far in the future for how little the main characters had changed. Regardless, this was still a delightful read.

Sam’s Update

What Sam is Finished:

  • Wings of Shadow by Nicki Pau Preto – this is the last book in this series so I can’t really tell you what it’s about. Again in my mission to catch up. Listened on audio and I REALLY enjoyed how it ended.
  • Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson – Welp, this isn’t the last book in the Skyward series (seeing a theme here this week?). Again, can’t say much except Spensa somehow got herself in to a worse pickle this time. Apparently there’s going to be a 4th book?! Not mad about it.
  • The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni – So, in this one, the main character is in prison and has been for 10 years. She’s the prison healer and has been since her father died in prison. When the Rebel Queen gets arrested and sentenced to “the trial” (basically a death sentence), she Hunger Games’d herself and volunteered to go through them herself instead. I enjoyed this more than i thought I would. It was slow in the middle, but the last chapter has this big reveal and cliff hanger and I need the next one now.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • The Warrior Moon by K. Arsenault Rivera – This is the last book in this series. It is a sapphic eastern european inspired story. I can’t say much but know that Shefali and Shikuza are still my kids and no one can come at me. This is a TOME so it’ll be a bit before I get through it.
  • Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan – This is the second book in this series. We received an ARC from NetGalley. I really love this series a lot. The main characters are all immortal gods and it changes the dynamic of the characters which is super cool.
  • The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik – This is the last book in this series and the second book had a HUGE cliffhanger and I am so happy that I got it from the library so soon after release. This is a dark academia fantasy series and I Love It.

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam, Ginny, and Minda
