What I drank prior: A WHOLE BOTTLE BITCHES

Goodreads Overview:

All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she’s a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing.

Spensa is sure there’s more to the story. And she’s sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars–and it was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie.

But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself–and she’ll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.

Drunk Overview: ok… so last we met Spensa she could hear the aliens (or the Krell) and she was using that ability to kick some Krell ass. When all of a sudden a not-Krell not-human person crash lands and gives Spensa coordinates to an alien space station. Spensa goes and impersonates the not-human and basically infiltrates the enemy’s space force and its fuckin’ awesome. Weirdest part is that they’re not the only Big Bad.

Spoiler-free Thoughts: I was putting this off because I was worried about it. The first one wasn’t anything like his adult fantasy stories and i was worried this would go down hill but it didn’t. I’m v happy that it didn’t disappoint, i immediately bought the next one.

Characters: ok so we to Spensa, our main character. She is trying so hard to both be a spy and learn how to be an alien all at once and oh by the way she’s got these new powers and DAMN it’s a lot. I’m surprised she could handle it all. I love the growth that she goes through all alone. She doesn’t pine after her man, she doesn’t whine about the food, she just does what she needs to do. Then there are the aliens. The half blue half red one is my son and I WILL NOT HEAR ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT IT. There’s the literal vapor and she’s the best (idk why i think she’s a she but in my head she is, sorta like AIDAN from Illuminae). I like the little hamsters, they’re hilarious. The whole new squad is cool and I can see Spensa’s struggle. Then we have M-Bot struggling with their life v not-life dissonance. It’s a lot.

Plot: It was pretty standard tbh. As soon as I knew what the premise was, i knew what it would be, but I was not even close to mad about it.

Writing Style: it’s Brando Sando

World Building: This was fab. What are these giant things?! Gimme MOOOREEEE

What to pair it with: This is a martini. A really bitter one.

Rating: 3.5/5

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam
