The Last Emperox by John Scalzi (The Interdependency #3)

What I drank prior: I’ve had about 6 seltzers and a shot. Parker and I had a great time rewatching west wing 🙂
The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems—and billions of people—are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction… and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.
Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her and who deny the reality of this collapse. But “control” is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people from impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough.
Will Grayland become the savior of her civilization… or the last emperox to wear the crown?
Drunk Overview: this is the last and final book of this trilogy and basically, everything had gone to hell. If you haven’t already read the first two, then you’re sort of SOL and it’s gonna be hard to explain so sucks to suck
Spoiler-free Thoughts: I cannot believe this is over like, I wanted this to be a Expanse type situation. But alas, I only got three and I was not disappointed.
Characters: all my kids, I still love them. Each character has its own arc and god damn, did some of their actions surprise me, but like, it wasn’t out of character for them. My heart goes out to Marce and Kiva like…. they were dealt shitty hands. I was super impressed though, even the benign side characters had complete arcs and that’s not easy to do.
Plot: ok but… WHAT?! My jaw hit the floor when the plot twist happened. I truly wanted Carina and Marce to head themselves back to earth but that would have been too easy. I’m much happier with the ending I got than the ending I wanted going in to this book and that’s the mark of a master story-teller.
World Building: I really hope this isn’t the last we see in this world cause I love it. I love it so much.
What to pair it with: appletini… this shit is delicious but dangerous and will fuck your up.
