Minda’s Update

I’m seriously going to read this week you guys. Promise, promise, promise! Dedicating time.

What Minda is (still) reading now:

• Followers by Megan Angelo – A “darkly funny story” about a near-future dystopia where social media and Big Brother has taken over. The book follows the path of three women toward a cataclysmic event. 
• White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo – Non-fiction from a professor of multicultural education on “how white fragility [defined as the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially] develops, how it protects racial inequity, and what we can do to engage more constructively.”

Sam’s Update

60 hour work week on a 4-day week? yep. That happened.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

• The Part About the Dragon was (Mostly) True by Sean Gibson: Our buddy Sean sent us his book for early review. It is a story that makes fun of fantasy tropes and is ABSOLUTELY HYSTERICAL. There’s this town/village that has a dragon problem but no money to pay adventurers to get rid of it. They instead hire an inexperienced group of adventurers to help, an elf, a rock man, some sort of rat witch, and a half dwarf half halfling. Anyway, I’m starting to count the number of times I laugh out loud while alone. It’s fun.
• Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust: This story revolves around the twin sister of the shah. Their mother dorked up and made a deal with a diev (sp?) and now she has poison in her blood. She can’t touch any living thing or it dies. When her brother returns from battle with a diev as his prisoner, our lady seeks to get information about how to cure her of the curse. This is pretty great so far. There are some things that I’m like… eh? but who am I to understand how a person who’s literally never touched another living thing’s motivations. We’ll see

What Sam Finished:

• The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli: This is the story of Asha. She hunts dragons. She’s also betrothed to the worst. Dad (king) said if she defeats “the first dragon” she won’t have to marry the worst. The worst’s slave is bae and he does a bad thing and she saves him from being killed and things go from there. Friend, I am so happy that this was a dragon book. I really really enjoyed it and will be doing a drunk review.

Ginny’s Update

Yes update from Ginny this week! Wish me luck in the next week I have two midterms, a two-day long career conference, a book club, and at least five more summer internships to apply to. I’m pretty sure I just need to start scheduling times to have a crisis (because I promise you, they come on a regular basis).

What Ginny Is Currently Reading:

• The Dark Archive by Genevieve Cogman: Hell yeah ARC! I love this series so much and I’m enjoying the way this book is escalating everything. An old villain returns but he is clearly wrong. Kai’s brother sucks major shit. The new Fae representative is real naive. This book has such wonderful intrigue. I’m so excited for December 2020 when everyone else can read this too.

What Ginny Finished:

• Off Limits Crush by Kelly Siskind: For a free book, this one was surprisingly great. Don’t get me wrong, the ex-wife is a shitty caricature and the word choices could be odd. But this was a pretty strong book. If the other books in the series were free, I would read them.
