The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen

What I drank prior: I bought a condo today… yes this is the second review I’ve written but who ar you to judge me? I fucking bought a condo. It’s almost midnight and I started drinking around 2pm. I am DRUNK.
A future chieftain.
Fie abides by one rule: look after your own. Her Crow caste of undertakers and mercy-killers takes more abuse than coin, but when they’re called to collect royal dead, she’s hoping they’ll find the payout of a lifetime.
A fugitive prince.
When Crown Prince Jasimir turns out to have faked his death, Fie’s ready to cut her losses—and perhaps his throat. But he offers a wager that she can’t refuse: protect him from a ruthless queen, and he’ll protect the Crows when he reigns.
A too-cunning bodyguard.
Hawk warrior Tavin has always put Jas’s life before his, magically assuming the prince’s appearance and shadowing his every step. But what happens when Tavin begins to want something to call his own?
Drunk Overview: This is a weird story where our main lady Fi (no idea the spelling) is being trained to be a clan chief. In this world, the races are built off bird species, and she’s a crow. Crows are the only “race” that can survive the plague and so they’re tasked with burning and disposing of the corpses of those who succumb. She “takes away” the crown princeafter hed’ succumb and it turns out he acually didnt’ die, but rather run away from his step mother. She’s trying to kill them, if Fi takes them to their allies then they promise to protect the crows. Make sense? No? Me either. Oh, and magic is based off of the teeth of the dead. Please, don’t ask me, i have no idea.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: This book was weird, friends. I struggled a lot with the magic. I struggled a lot with the plot.
Characters: This was a YA fantasy at it’s heart with its tropes and all. No love triangle but a love to hate for sure. And not with the prince… which was refreshing but not enough to overcome the flatness of the rest of them. They are SO BLAND. Fi is a well rounded character but the rest of them weren’t. She wants to learn to read and to learn to use a weapon and la la, but none of the rest of them have ANY wants or desires other than “beat the bad guy” or “i love the girl” so that’s cool.
Plot: WHAT IS THIS?! It was a bunch of “we’re walking and then we’re walking some more and then…oh my god, we’re walking again.” If they had gotten caught at literally any point, I would have been fine but…
Writing Style: I listened on audio and while there are times I have to go back because I am using it to fall asleep and I don’t remember (I use audiobooks to fall asleep) I had to go back when I was fully awake.
World Building: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS MAGIC?!
What to pair it with: This is so weird guys haha. What am I supposed to do here? It’s like… a funky fruit beer that is in the same lane as beer but tastes nothing like it and its AWFUL.
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
