Whichwood by Tahereh Mafi
What I drank prior: i’m alone… and i drank a bottle of wine so i could write my reviews tonight… please… don’t judge me lol
Spoiler-free Overview: HOKAY so for those of you who haven’t read Furthermore… this is basically a follow-on story. You *can* read them out of order but i wouldn’t suggest it. BUt ok, Alice is on a quest to become a real boy.. i mean wait… to become an adult? i guess? and her quest is to travel to help out this girl… and i say girl because she’s like… 12? (someone correct me)
Spoiler-free Thoughts: so… i audio’d both these books and the narrator is crazy good. really brings to light the middle-grade-ness of the whole thing but still hysterical to the adult. ANYWHO this one was WAY better than the first. addresses failure, addresses challenges, addresses introvertedness (though not in the best way but it’s addressed), the magic is awesome, it’s just great.
Characters: only gonna talk about the new characters, Laylee and Benyamin. They. Are. Amazing. Your heart breaks for Laylee and cheers for Benyamin. Really well done.
Plot: the plot was awesome. you think it’s done but it’s totally not, and things go as planned and other don’t it’s just wonderful
Writing Style: it’s Mafi… she’s amazing.
World Building: THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART!!! Laylee’s job is literally to act as a guide from the living world to the world beyond. Reminds me of the Abhorsen but like… just a little different. ALMOST a necromancer. Guys, I want more from these world.s
What to pair it with: absinthe… cause… Sam from @thoughtsontomes says so AND cause you don’t get the Real Thing in the US and you can’t get the Real Moordeshores irl.
Rating: 4/5 Shots
COMMENT DOWN BELOW: What’s your fave middle grade fantasy?
