Weekly Wrap-Up: June 12 – 18, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds! And Happy Juneteenth everyone!

Ginny’s Update

What Ginny Finished:

  • Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller: Maria is in charge of her family’s hotel (in the 1870’s ish) and is dealing with a a whole host of problems right before hosting a ball. Meanwhile, Eli, a Treasury man, is investigating some espionage in Vienna. This book was a ton of fun. Mostly lighthearted, this book has a fun mystery and some dealing with trauma. Regardless, a total blast.
  • The Fiancee Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur: Tansy makes up a girlfriend to avoid going to family dinners with her childhood bully/cousin’s husband. Gemma, a model/badass, and said childhood bully’s black-sheep cousin has her reason for going along with the fake relationship on the inheritance front. I love how quickly the fake romance turned real. And OMG both of the heroines talk to each other. Something happens and they talk to each other. It’s wonderful when that happens! Again, this was a blast.
  • Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi: First off, I listened an audiobook of this so my spelling is all gonna be off. Zelie is a diviner who has been entrusted with attempting to bring back the magic in the land that has been suppressed by the shitty king. She’s joined by Zayne (her brother), Amari (daughter of said shitty king) and is being pursued by Innon (said shitty king’s son). This book was great! Though there was one perspective I really wasn’t feeling, and god this book got brutal. Still, I enjoyed the lore of this world and the way the different types of magic worked.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • The Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille: A mafia boss moves in next to John Sutter in a ridiculously old-school partially wealthy neighborhood. This book if mostly full of horrible people, but some of those people know they’re horrible, and our main characters says he knows he’s horrible but doesn’t actually believe it. The only reason I’m reading this book is because I like the mafia boss.

Sam’s Update

No Update from Sam this week

What Sam is Finished:

  • Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson: so basically on this planet, the moons shed these spores and if they get wet, they grow vines. This also include like… if you accidentally eat them. So they’re very dangerous. There’s not a lot of water around, but the oceans are made of these spores. Our main lady, Tress, falls in love with the Duke’s son. Duke’s son goes on a trip and doesn’t come back, so Tress went to find him. THINGS HAPPEN. Oh this is also narrated by Hoid, which is absolutely hilarious and I loved this.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • Master of One by Jaida Jones and Dani Bennett – This is a book I got through Fairyloot. Basically, our thief Rags gets scooped up from jail to go on an errand for the Queen and break in to an unbreakable maze place. When he gets to the end (not a spoiler cause it’s in the first 100 pages) he wakes up a scary Fae and they’re goin on an adventure with the scarier sorcerer that pulled him from jail.
  • The Last Hero by Linden A. Lewis: This is the finale to the First Sister series so I can’t say much about the plot, but I am enjoying it. Unfortunately, it went back to the library so I have to wait.
  • Silver in the Bone by Alexandra Bracken: This is a new Arthurian by Alex Bracken. I have been disappointed in this author’s work, but I felt the need to hate read it. The main character isn’t magic, but she’s got this brother and they steal/find stuff for people? Anyway, they get on contract to find this ring or whatever and its a competition with a dude named Emris (uh huh) and that’s about where I’m at.
  • Cooking at Home: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Recipes by David Chang and Priya Krishna – I read a review online that said this book is meant to be read cover to cover like a novel… so that’s what I’m doing and it’s actually fab. It helps that they’re talking a lot about Asian flavors (naturally) and I’ve been dying to learn more about those flavor profiles.

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam, Minda, and Ginny
