Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse (Between Earth and Sky #2)

What I drank prior: I’m on a boat and… I’m goin fast and… I’ve counted and I shit you not, I’ve had 14 vodka sodas. And am having a smoke and then headed back downstairs to Dazzles
Goodreads Overview:
There are no tides more treacherous than those of the heart. —Teek saying
The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God’s eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent.
The Meridian: a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. How do you live when legends come to life, and the faith you had is rewarded?
As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth.
And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?
Drunk Overview: so this is the second book in this series so if you haven’t read the first one gtfo
So our boy the crow dude didn’t die like he was supposed to. And neither did our sun chick. Both of them are sorta becoming divine. The sun is basically gone, which is scary, and religion may be coming back. Both of them are tryna figure out their destiny while, you know, not dying.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: I’m not gonna lie, this definitely suffered from second book syndrome.
Characters: So, there are only a few i remember. One is our crow boy Serapio. He’s broody and scary and literally falling apart. He misses his bay Xiala and she’s tryna get back to him. But gets spirited away and may be used as a pawn in some political scheme. Then there’s Naranpa who isn’t a whiny annoying brat in this one like the last one. She actually does stuff and thinks for finer self which is cool.
Plot: so this is one of those things that i wish i had my book of notes with me but i isn’t want to bring it on the boat but from what i understand i was a smidge bored. I remember how it ends and I remember I want the next one but that’s about it.
Writing Style: I’ve not read a book by this author where I didn’t think the writing got better. She knows what’s up.
World Building: this… is gonna be group
What to pair it with: I’m on a boat leaving Mexico. This is 1000% mezcal.
Rating: 2.5 / 5
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
