Weekly Wrap-Up: Jan 16 – 22, 2023

Happy Monday, Boozie Book Nerds!

Sam’s Update

THE EAGLES ARE GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!!!

What Sam is Finished:

  • Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez – this is a YA Fiction book set in Argentina… need I say more? Well… I gobbled this up…

What Sam is Currently Reading:

  • The Dragon’s Promise by Elizabeth Lim – this is the sequel to Sox Crimson Cranes. Shiori has to find the dragon who’s pearl she’s got and broke.. listening on audio and love it
  • Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse – this is the sequel to Black Sun, all in my journey to catch up on my open series. I loooooove this series.
  • Cooking at Home: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Recipes by David Chang and Priya Krishna – I read a review online that said this book is meant to be read cover to cover like a novel… so that’s what I’m doing and it’s actually fab. It helps that they’re talking a lot about Asian flavors (naturally) and I’ve been dying to learn more about those flavor profiles.

Ginny’s Update

Happy tons of snow in Utah/Colorado. I just got back from a great ski trip to Steamboat and I’m exhausted in the best of ways. So happy to be home though, and I got a whole book read just this weekend!

What Ginny Finished:

  • Hide by Kiersten White: Mac’s dad killed her sister and mother when she was a child and years later she ends up in a competition for hide and seek in a creepy abandoned amusement park. First off, horror is never increased by giving it a physical description. Second, the ending felt wildly underwhelming.
  • The Hookup Plan by Farrah Rochon: Well, I accidentally skipped the second book in this series, but so far London and Drew (the main characters) were high school rivals (kind of), who end up as friends with benefits years later. The snark was fun, but this book made it clear how weird it is that none of these people seem to have friends…
  • City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab:I’m not gonna bother with a real description. It was fine? Danny Phantom did it better.
  • The Obelisk Gate by N. K. Jemisin: This is book two in the Broken Earth series and good god. So good. I love the way this book pulls together all of these different plotlines. Basically, Essun still wants to find her daughter, but is dealing with the slow-death of her teacher/enemy/lover from the first book and different factions popping up in her underground society.

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

  • In One Person by John Irving: Lots of someone talking about their sexual awakening at 15… I literally have not picked this up since I first started it.
  • Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao: I really enjoyed Iron Widow and Zhao has said this is the book she’s proudest of. It is a middle grade which oddly means I’m struggling with parts of it. But Zachary ends up being a conduit for an ancient Chinese ruler, which helps him connect to that heritage, but also the ruler has a very complicated history…

Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,

— Sam, Minda, and Ginny
