Minda’s drunk review of My Darling Husband by Kimberly Belle
What I drank prior: All day drinking, really. Started with Trulys on the boat, then beers at the house, nap, and bottle of champagne.
Bestselling author of DEAR WIFE and THE MARRIAGE LIE, Kimberly Belle returns with her most heart-pounding thriller to date, as a masked home invader reveals the cracks in a marriage.
Everyone is about to know what her husband isn’t telling her…
Jade and Cam Lasky are by all accounts a happily married couple with two adorable kids, a spacious home and a rapidly growing restaurant business. But their world is tipped upside down when Jade is confronted by a masked home invader. As Cam scrambles to gather the ransom money, Jade starts to wonder if they’re as financially secure as their lifestyle suggests, and what other secrets her husband is keeping from her.
Cam may be a good father, a celebrity chef and a darling husband, but there’s another side he’s kept hidden from Jade that has put their family in danger. Unbeknownst to Cam and Jade, the home invader has been watching them and is about to turn their family secrets into a public scandal.
With riveting twists and a breakneck pace, My Darling Husband is an utterly compelling thriller that once again showcases Kimberly Belle’s exceptional talent for domestic suspense.
My Summary: Jade, a stay-at-home mother of two is being held hostage with her two children in her home. Her husband, Cam, has had a no-good-very-bad day when he finds out his family is held hostage. His food business as a chef on-the-rise is thriving, so who of his many burned enemies could be behind it? And can Jade keep her and her family alive while he gathers the random?
Spoiler-free Thoughts: Nah, this one wasn’t for me. I grabbed this after being on a roll reading A Flicker in the Dark in one day, but it didn’t deliver. I did still read it in one day though, so not that big of a deal.
Characters: Look, I’m not rooting for the bad guy, but Jade and Cam aren’t great. Besides the kiddos, literally no one was like able here. Not Jade, not Cam, and certainly not the man threatening them. Or anyone they interest with. Literally everyone. Jade has a fierce mom thing going, but she’s also lost all of the self she once had to her marriage and sort of sold her soul. Cam is a jackass who thinks he can get away with everything with money AND is super shady to his wife, who he claims to love. And the hostage taker is an idiot who I cannot believe gets any sort of redemption arc. The BBS (aka the kids) are fine, but annoying at parts. Beatrix is clearly the better of the two.
Plot: Your typical as-it-happens mystery. We start with Jade picking her prodigal daughter up at school, thinking she being stalked, and her husband blowing it off even though he has no reason to do so. Then pretty quickly we jump into the hostage situation and as things progress the true story of Cam (and Jade) unfolds. The story is more about Cam than Jade, which I didn’t love. But as I said she’s not great either, though I think we’re supposed to root for her. At one point i was like why the fuck has she not asked the bad guy was he is there? 70% of the way in. And he was more than happy to share!
Writing Style: This was interesting. We have pieces where it is Cam in the present interviewing on camera and POVs from Jade and Cam and hostage taker in the past during the event in question.
Drink Pairing: Wine coolers, I guess. Wasn’t that into this.
Rating: 2/5 shots
