Minda’s Bookémon Badgeathon TBR

I am a huge fan of Pokémon… I seriously kept buying new iterations of gameboy every time a new version came out. THAT is what the game meant to me.

Here are a few reasons why Pokemon is the greatest game EVER:

  1. It taught you how to care for something. I mean this in like a take-care-of-your-pets kind of way because you nurture this cute ass creature and it grew up to do amazing things. If you abandoned it, you felt the consequences.
  2. Not a single critter dies! They just faint—how quaint.
  3. The importance of time and training was paramount! Good lessons for young kids.
  4. I mean, they are just adorbs.

So, when Sam flagged the Bookémon Badgeathon happening this month, I really tried to say no. But then I thought ‘what would younger me do as she ran around the park pretending to be dratini in a battle with abra?’ And was like of course I’m doing this.

I’m on #TeamMystic and here’s my hopefully achievable TBR:

The Fantastical Badge (Fantasy)
Fairy & Dragon type

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert has been on my list since Ginny recommended it, I assume ages ago, and this seems like the perfect opp to read.

The Archival Badge (Historical Fiction)
Ground type

On audio, I’ll be reading Where the Crawdad Sings by Delia Owens. Coming-of-age story + murder mystery, gimme.

The Scientific Badge (Sci-Fi)
Electric type

For this one, I’ll be reading Redshirts by John Scalzi—definitely sounds action-packed. (Editor’s Note: it is…)

The Amour Badge (Romance/Contemporary)
Fire type

In the contemporary category: That’s Not What Happened by Kody Kleplinger. I actually got this one at BookCon last year and recently found it again on my shelf. It deals with the aftermath of a high school shooting—something too real in today’s world.

The Diversity Badge (Romance/Contemporary)
Fighting type

My diversity pick is The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson, recommended by Sam (review here). It’s historical fantasy set in 1491 in Spain with Muslim characters, which sounds pretty cool.

Here are the other categories I won’t get to, in case you’re interested:

  • The Jester Badge (Humor) – Ice & Grass type
  • The Prose Badge (Poetry) – Steel
  • The Memory Badge (Biography/Memoir) – Rock
  • The Know it All Badge (Nonfiction) – Bug
  • The Panic Badge (Horror) – Ghost
  • The Pictorial Badge (Comic/Graphic Novel/Manga) – Flying
  • The Exemplary Badge (Classic) – Normal
  • The Creative Badge (Art/Music-based) – Water

Another month, another readathon, amirite? At least it’s another cool hook.
