Weekly Wrap-Up: Jan 28 – Feb 3

Whatsup! Sam is, surprise surprise, traveling again, so it’s another Ginny-fill-in. I’ll let her explain but she’s doing something fun again.

Minda’s Update

What Minda finished:

The Gravity of us

  • The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper – YA gay teen romance + a mission to Mars that’s pulling in the nation’s interest. It was great. Stay tuned for the review—the book comes out this week!

What Minda is reading now:

queen of nothing

  • The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black – I am loving this trilogy! I know Jude is kinda an idiot, but I still like the slow burn even in a fast-pace read. Here’s Sam’s review.

Ginny’s Update

Long week, good weekend, tired.

Ginny Finished:

How to Cook Your Daughter: A Memoir by Jessica Henra and Blake Morrison: I mistakenly assumed this book would be funny but it’s a very bleak book about dealing with parental sexual assault that happened at a young age. It was really powerful.

  • Learning to Swear in America by Katie Kennedy: Probably going to write a book review on this one.
  • Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Signh:  Book twelve in the series finally deals with Kaleb Krychek who has shown up in a bunch of the previous books. He’s outwardly cool and “Silenced” but is really full of rage and self-loathing and is endless in his quest to claim best friend and childhood crush Sahara. I’m starting to wish there was a little more variety in the heroines in this series. The women generally fall into a ‘ray of sunshine’ description while the men are usually the ‘gruff, stoic, and dangerous’ types. I wouldn’t mind another book (because there is at least one) where the dude is the one who is a literal ray of sunshine.
  • A Red-Rose Chain by Seanan McGuire: This is the 9th book in the series, and boy the ways these books escalate is interesting. I’m going to write a review and because there are so many books I’m only going to summarize in vague turns. Someone Toby had a hand in taking down is bitter about it and now it’s Toby’s job to stop a war.
  • Making my Pitch: A Woman’s Baseball Odyssey by Ila Jane Borders and Jean Hastings Ardell: I picked this book up at bookcon a while back and finally got around to reading it. The story could be a little too focused on statistics, I know what to expect of MLB stats but not high school, college, or indie leagues which meant I was probably judging some things unfairly. That being said, it’s an interesting story of someone who has a goal and is going to do everything they can to fulfill it.

Currently Reading:

Hilariously Ever After by Many Authors: This is a collection of romance novels that someone mentioned on twitter and was like five bucks so I went for it. Apparently its 2200 pages long so this one might take me a while.

  • Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody: a YA book set in the City Of Sin, I chose this book for one of my book clubs. The characters are both late teens and I mostly wonder how Levi, who is the head of a gang, managed to become the head of a gang when everyone else is older. We’ll see if there’s an answer later.

Linz’s Updates

Celebrated my birthday, another year old and definitely no wiser, because I’m super hungover after a day of wine tasting. Thank god for the Superbowl and all this hangover food.

What Linz Read

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell: A 25yo orphan finds out she’s inherited an estate and a very mysterious family history. It was a decent read but too much was going on.

  • A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson: The first of many ARCs from ALA midwinter. I was dyyyying to read this. A senior investigates the murder-suicide of two teens in her hometown. I REALLY enjoyed this.
  • Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland: The long-awaited sequel to the alt-history zombie novel Dread Nation. Also from ALA, IT RULES

What Linz is reading now

sufficiently advanced

  • Sufficiently Advanced Magic by Andrew Rowe: Corin’s brother disappeared years ago in a magical trial, and now that Corin is old enough to take the trial, his only goal is to find his brother and bring him back. I think this dude was self published? It’s ok so far.

Sam’s Update

Sam is currently writing this from Hogsmede in HP world. Didn’t finish anything…. I’m sorta on vacation…

Until next time, we main forever drunkenly yours,

Sam, Ginny, Linz, and Minda
