Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
What I drank prior: A buncha booze cause I was watching Eagles Wildcard game (we won) and then the golden globes and then Ginny made me take two shots.
Spoiler-free Overview: Alrighty. So our leading lady, Spin, has a tragic past. Her dad, a pilot in the DDF (it is the DDF right? Editor’s note: yes.), was in the battle of all battles, and he seemingly abandoned his fleet and marked a coward and shotdown. This sci-fi book is set on a weird planet where humans crashed and were marooned in a galactic war with the mysterious Krell. Spin wants to get out of her coward father’s shadow and becomes a recruit in the pilot school. Stuff happens.
Spoiler-free Thoughts: i was so worried I was gonna hate this. Sanderson is my hero but he’s the fantasy man, not really a sci-fi guy. This was good. Not my favorite of his books but it was good. Exceeded expectations.
Characters: so Spin is… a lot. She’s dramatic and #damaged. But I feel like she grows really well throughout the story. I feel like we’re supposed to hate her at first and then she learns and grows up and figures it out. It was refreshing. Our supporting cast has some ups and downs. The flight leader, literally called Jerkface, is a dickwad at first, but again, grows on you. And her BFF is actually my favorite. Begins and ends well rounded. M-Bot is a hysterical AI and I love it. The rest of the characters seem like tokens or stereotypes but each have something that surprises you.
Plot: It never stops. I thought that with a book so long if either get burned out or I’d be bored. I was neither.
Writing Style: Iiiiii am too drunk to comment on this right now
World Building: It’s Sanderson. He’s the master of world building and this is no exception.
What to pair it with: uh…. beer. I want a nice ale for this one.
Rating: 3.75/5 shots
COMMENT DOWN BELOW: What did you guys think of this one? What is your favorite Sanderson?
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam
Glad you enjoyed this! I haven’t read any Sanderson yet but this book sounds so interesting, glad it was good given he is a fantasy dude
